Gait Analysis - The Runners Guide Speciality!

This is where we look at the movement of your foot as it contacts and moves on the floor. Each person is different and there are different types of footwear for each foot type.

RS Scan foot plate

This is a force platform containing over 2000 sensors. When you walk across the plate it sends an image to the computer. It will give an image of your foot, the way it moves and the forces put through differnet areas of the foot.

Why is it important to know about your Feet and Gait?

Feet that function poorly can result in symptoms almost anywhere in your body including (but not exclusively); Pain in the ball of your foot, for example; Neuroma or Metatarsalgia, Mid foot or arch pain, for example; tendon and muscle pulls, Heel pain including plantar fasciitis and policeman’s heel, Ankle injuries such as Achilles tendonitis and recurring ankle sprains, Shin splints, Excessive pronation and flattened arches also result in pain and cartilage damage to your knee. Your hips and back posture may also be affected by feet that are not functioning well leading to lower back pain and hip problems. As a running it is vital that you have all the information open to you regarding your feet, inorder that you get the correct shoes for your foot type so you can run pain free!
This is a free service and it can be also used for orthotic prescription.

There are only 2 other RS Footscanners in the South West, one is at Bristol University and the other is at Exeter University. It is the most advanced technology available to us at this time, the footscan plates to measure pressure and force distribution accurately at High speed and High resolution.

  • What does the RS Footscanner do and how does it do it?
  • Why is Speed and Resolution an issue to the user?
Sampling speed - Slow sampling speed means a reduction in data being collected and can cause inaccurate analysis and prescription due to subtle changes in the mechanics of the foot not being identified. The footscan systems can record up to 500 frames of data a second, this allows in depth analysis of the pressure and force distribution and their association with the biomechanics of the foot. Resolution - The footscan systems use small sensors that are 5mm X 7mm, these allow accurate analysis of pressure deviations under all regions of the foot. This is necessary to get a clear picture of foot mechanics, and can be vital when dealing with medical conditions such as diabetes. The combination of high sampling speed and resolution makes footscan a leading competitor in pressure measurement systems.
